Cooking For Fun

Hanging out with my best friends has become a rare moment nowadays. One friend is doing her last year of master’s in Nijmegen and the other one is always busy and has irregular working hours because she works as a caregiver. When I had my day off on Friday 2 weeks ago, I texted them when I was running errands to see if they had time to come over my place to cook together.

Miraculously, all of them could come and we cooked together our favorite dish!!

I loved our cooking moments, because we could exchange news and jokes, chat, and just be there it felt really nice to see them again. We cooked in my small kitchen for two hours, the whole house filled with petis aroma (petis=black thick shrimp paste) and I was sure that my husband would complain about it :((

{mbak – mbak dr yayasan jaman sekarang ganjen bener ya?}

We made rujak cingur (Cingur Salad). For you who do not know what that is, it is a traditional dish from East Java and it contains pretty disgusting ingredients.

I mean it.

See below for the ingredients!

  • water spinach (indonesian: kangkung), rinse it well
  • bean sprouts
  • unripe mangoes
  • tempe
  • tofu
  • cingur (cow noses cartilage) kikil (thick cowhide), boiled (we used cow legs!)

cingur paste:

  • 4 pieces chillies more or less, depends how spicy you want it to be
  • roast 3 tbs peanuts, until it turns brown, set aside
  • 200 – 250 grams of petis udang (black thick shrimp paste)
  • 1 teaspoon trasi (dried shrimp paste) roasted
  • 1 pisang kluthuk (unripe banana), grated
  • 1 tsp tamarind
  • 50 cc of boiled water

Mix these ingredients with a food processor except the petis udang (if you don’t have a food processor, you can also grind it in with pestle and mortar) until it becomes a paste. Leave the petis udang out!

how to cook Cingur Salad

  • Boil the cow noses cartilage, kikil (thick cowhide), we used cow legs! Boil them in a big pan until it is tender. When it is done, take it out of the pan cut them into pieces, set aside
  • Boil the water spinach, sprouts briefly and then remove from the cooker.
  • Slice young mangoes to pieces
  • Sautée tempe and tofu, set aside

how to serve:

mix salad seasoning paste with ingredients and cingur or kikil. This time blends it well with the black shrimp paste (petis)

It looked so revolting, but it tasted really delightful. There you go, one of my favorite dishes ever!

Hasil Dari Budwig Diet

Sempet beberapa bulan lalu nulis tentang Budwig Diet. Kalau mau baca cerita lengkapnya tinggal klik disini ya.

{Greek yogurt, flaxseed oil, chia seeds, organic corn flakes, sunflower seeds, blackberries, wheat bran and a dollop of maple syrup}

  • Gak begah. Walaupun porsi nya sedikit tapi karena isi sarapannya penuh nutrisi dan vitamin, jadi gak bikin terlalu kenyang enak buat beraktivitas
  • Gak sakit perut lagi setelah sarapan.

Libur Akhir Tahun

Sebelum tahun 2013 berakhir aku untungnya sempat ambil cuti. Sisa jatah cuti ada 14 hari libur. Cihuuyy! Nah sebelum libur aku udah bikin list hal apa aja yang pengen dilakuin selama liburan. Selain Natalan dan ngerayain Tahun Baru tentu nya ya.

Hari pertama dan kedua oh my God ikke tidur lamaaa banget. Ada kali 18 jam trus bangun makan, gosok gigi, nonton serial apa gitu deh lupa, eh tidur lagi sampe besokannya. Asli, tepar…energi abis. Nah hari Minggu tanggal 22 Des baru deh mulai beresin rumah, bersihin debu dan kotoran. Mulai gotong royong sama suami dari mulai belanja grocery tapi hampir pengsan di dalem karena rame banget sama orang sibuk belanja hari raya, ngelap kaca jendela dari luar (ya Tuhan cepet banget deh kotor nya gara gara ujan terus disini), nyuci baju (buset, baju hampir habis semua numpuk di hamper) dan undies karena yang tersisa di laci baju cuma undies melar melar segedha sprei yg muat sampe atas perut..hahaha. Lucu nya lagi ngeliat suami, dia pake kaos kaki kiri sama kanan beda corak, saking semua kaos kaki nya habis…hihihi.

Saying Goodbye to A Fabulous Summer 2013

The ugliest part of summer finally comes upon us. We have to say goodbye to a fabulous summer! I mean it, this year we had such a blissful summer. Finally, after so many years we all have to put up with lousy summers. The temperatures were really warm with a lot of sun. We often went to the parks, lakes and to the woods, and also to the city “beaches” (ie: Blijburg, industrial areas like NDSM and Roest). I also went to the cinema A LOT this summer and saw summer blockbusters, jeeezz so many good movies. My faves were The Heat, Mud, Behind the Candelabra and The Conjuring (whooaa!!it scared the hell out of me).

In August we attended our friends’ beautiful wedding ceremony in Haarlem. The civil wedding ceremony was held at the beautiful Haarlem City Hall. And then the party continued to Bloemendaal beach not so far from the town Haarlem.  Wow, the bride looked like a fairy 😀 she was soooo pretty and flawless, and she had in total 3 wedding gowns for the day. WOW. We were so happy for them, and the day was a fantastic summer day, everything was so perfect!

IMG_20130923_045238

On September 3, we celebrated our first marriage anniversary. It just keeps better and we cannot believe how fast time flies 😀 We had a date night, we did exactly the same things we did on our first date back then in 2006! First had drinks on one of cafes on Marie Heinekenplein in De Pijp (a district in Amsterdam) then we had a nice summer dinner at an Ethiopian restaurant nearby.

IMG_20130904_022952

Humble dinner but the taste is amazing

This month my friend Diana and I threw a hen party for our dear friend, Lusi. She’ll get married next month and we wanted to give her a special night to remember. The wedding will be held in Jakarta, so a bunch of her church friends and me (not a gang of the church) went ballistic on a Sunday evening throwing her a hen party. We went for bowling sessions and set her up for some nasty challenges in the city. For instance; asked a man to give her a peck on the cheek wearing red lipstick/ asked her to sing national hymn in the Dam square/ Asked a man to sing for her and many of those crazy acts. Reminded me of my own hen party last year hahaha. After that we ended the evening by having dinner at Saigon, a nice Vietnamese restaurant near Leidseplein. We did not go for the tacky hen party like hiring a stripper, the idea itself grossed us out. We really had a ball! and it was really unforgettable. I was not allowed to put her pictures here, too bad hahaha!!

Last weekend I met up with mba Yoyen in the city, it was a perfect event to wrap up summer. This was our second meet up, we met for the first time a couple of months ago together with Teppy who was holidaying at that moment! Teppy we miss you too 🙂 Mba Yoyen and I tried a newly opened Korean restaurant, Yokiyo in De Wallen (Red Light District). I have read good reviews about this restaurant so I thought we should try it out. Just look at our jumbo size lunch! It tasted really delicious too and the most important thing, it’s affordable (12  euros for this jumbo hot plate of Bibimbap Bulgogi). After that we went to De Drie Graefjes on Rokin to have some fancy desserts 🙂 I chose a Red Velvet cupcake and mba Yoyen chose a carrot cake. I gotta say that the thing I loved the most from this place was the cake sizes. They were HUGE for the price. And the taste of all cakes here was just heaven! Oh did I say the kimchi from the Korean restaurant was excellent? hehehe.

The summer is definitely over. It is raining almost every day now, the temperatures get cooler and it gets windier than ever. And I start feeling bleh in the mornings because it gets darker outside, and raining 😦  Buuuuttt, I am super happy to going back home to Indonesia ! We will be flying to Indonesia in like a couple of hours from now and will be staying there for about 3 weeks. Enjoying the food, sun and beaches. I will see my families, my dearest grandmother in Solo and my friends. It is just lovely, I need this badly!!! The most awesome part of this holiday is, my parents in-law are coming with us (this is their first visit to Asia) and our dear friends Stefan & Kim are also joining..HOW COOL IS THIS?!!!

So, goodbye for now Europe! I am not going to miss you 🙂

PS: I am so going to miss my little children (kitties) though *cryyyy!*

Sehat Itu Penting Banget

Sweet Black Pudding

Today was one of those days..

I wish I were in Jakarta…I miss my hometown so much lately.

My late grandma always made this dessert for me. She usually made sweet mung beans porridge/pudding and black glutinous rice porridge/pudding and we ate it by mixing both pudding together with coconut milk sauce.

It tastes really yummy and nutritious too 🙂

IMAG0512_1

It was super easy to make and I used this recipe but without soaked it overnight because it was just a spontaneous idea I had this afternoon. Thus I only soaked it for about 2 hours, and had to cook it for more than 2 hours (sigh) to get the rice a bit softer.

Meatless Recipe: Scrambled “Eggs”

I am not confident in posting about recipes and such. I love cooking don’t get me wrong, but I just have no talent in food styling. It seems that I will not do any justice to the meal I cook, because if it tastes delicious it surely will look like crap, thanks for my barely there talent in food styling. But this time, I am so wanting to share a super easy recipe for when you feel lazy to cook elaborately.

We eat meatless a couple of times in a week. We mostly make salads, or omelet. Or just eat fried rice (nasi goreng) or noodle with wok vegetables and vegetarian meat (made from corns). This time I would like to share a mundane recipe of vegan food, scrambled eggs. Of course, it wasn’t from real eggs, instead I made it from tofu. Check it out for the ingredients, below:

  • Tofu
  • 3 – 4 tbs nutritional  yeast flakes (I bought them at an organic food shop)
  • a lemon
  • 2 pieces of spring unions, cut the white parts only
  • 1 piece of tomato, minced
  • 3 sprigs of celery leaves for garnishing
  • 3 cloves of garlic, minced

Spice blend:

  • 1/4 ts saffron
  • 1/2 ts ground cumin
  • 1/2 – 1 ts ground turmeric, if you use more than 1 tbs it will taste a bit too bitter
  • dried chilli flakes
  • 2 fresh red peppers, chopped
  • salt and pepper

First, you scramble the tofu and mix it with the yeast flakes thoroughly, until it looks like this:

DSCN1928

Second, stir the spice blend together in a small cup. Add water and mix. Set aside.

{ Nutritional yeast flakes, I eat it with everything..sprinkle it on top of all meals }

Preheat a large, heavy bottomed pan over medium high heat. Saute the garlic in olive oil for about a minute. Toss the tofu mix in the pan, and saute for about 5-10 minutes, using a spatula to stir it. Get under the tofu when you are stirring, scrape the bottom and don’t let it stick to the pan, that is where the good, crispy stuff is. Use a thin metal spatula to get the job done, a wooden or plastic one won’t really cut it. when the tofu dries out you can add some lemon squeezes or olive oil. Add the spice blend, and minced tomatoes then mix to incorporate. Then, add the nutritional yeast, spring unions cuts and fresh black pepper. Cook for about 5 more minutes. The yeast will act as a substitute for cheese, so you can sprinkle it as much as you want.

Tadaaah!

Eet smakkelijk 🙂
